Stanga was born on January 1st , 1960 in the southern state of Louisiana ; the life he lived before becoming famous is largely unknown, information about his parents or the kind of life he led during his childhood is not available to the public. However, it is known that due to the actions of the white supremacist group Ku Klux Klan in the state where he spent his childhood and attended school, his early education was cut short by his mother, who feared for his safety.
It was during his breaks from school that he began exploring nearby swamps, the state of Louisiana is known for its swampy terrain and as a teenager, Stanga knew the swamps like the back of his hand.

As a child of his youth, Shelby Stanga gained valuable swamp life experience while also learning how to be a good lumberjack in the swamps. The first time he dealt with logging was when he was asked to take away a tree that had fallen into the water in one of the swamps he frequented. It charted their route into the forests to use wood for building and construction. He was part of the show’s third season before producing his show, which consisted of Ax Men ; his show called The Legend of Shelby the Swamp Man is also produced and aired by the History Channel. This was created as a result of the popularity he brought to the university Ax Men. Prior to his time on Ax Men, Stanga had been on another show called Man Against. Wild, in 2003.
