His Biography, Age – Who is Elijah Cummings?
Elijah Cummings was born with the full name Elijah Eugene Cummings on January 18, 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States to parents Ruth Elma Cochran Cummings and Robert Cummings. He is the third child of seven children.
Additionally, his mother Ruth Cummings was the founder of Victory Prayer Chapel. She died at home at the age of 91 following complications from a stroke.
Political career
After graduating from Baltimore City College in 1969, he continued his education at Howard University, Washington, DC, where he received his bachelor’s degree in political science. As a college student, he served effectively in student government as class president and later as student government treasurer. His efficiency and effectiveness earned him the position of student government president, as well as a member of the Phi Beta Society.
Subsequently, Cummings studied law at the University of Maryland Law School and graduated in 1976 with the J.D. degree. He also served at the bar of Maryland where he practiced law for 18 years.
In 1983, he landed his first public office as Legislative Speaker in the Maryland House of Delegates. He served in this position for 14 uninterrupted years of wise service, which earned him the place of the first African American to be elected Pro Tempore President in Maryland history.
In 1996, Congressman Cummings won the primary Democratic award and defeated his Republican opponent – Kenneth Konder with over 80% of the vote. Sources also claim that in his subsequent elections his vote never fell below 70% and in 2006 he was unopposed.
