She was born Suzanne Brigit Bird in Syosset, New York on October 16, 1980. Sue’s father is a Russian Jew born in Italy and she has an older sister named Jen. She belongs to a multiracial ethnicity and holds both Israeli and American citizenship. Inspired by her athletically passionate older sister, Sue was interested in sports from an early age. She started playing basketball at the age of eleven and participated in several competitions including amateur athletic union competitions and the St John’s basketball game.
She attended Syosset High School where she continued her high school basketball career. After completing her freshman and sophomore year, Sue transferred to Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York. She ended her high school career by winning the New York Championship and the National Championship. She was also named to the WNBA Team USA.
Sue also played for the University of Connecticut Huskies during her college career. She led the Huskies to two national championships and received the Nancy Lieberman Award. She finished her college career scoring 1,378 points, 585 assists and 23 steals.

After graduating from the University of Connecticut, Sue Bird was the Seattle Storm’s first overall pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft. Alongside Lauren Jackson, Sue finished her rookie season averaging 14 .4 points in 32 games. She was named the WNBA first team and a finalist for the Rookie of the Year award.
Sue alongside Betty Lennox and Lauren Jackson led the Storm to win their first WNBA championship in 2004. The Storm also won their second WNBA championship in 2010.
