Liang-Shun Lim is a Canadian-American magician known professionally as Shin Lim, renowned for his use of card manipulation and sleight of hand. He is famous for intricate close-up card magic routines, during which he remains silent with tricks set to music. Similarly, he is self-taught and has learned much of his skills by watching YouTube, on which some of his techniques have since been posted.
Initially, Lim trained to be a pianist, however, after doctors diagnosed her with carpal tunnel syndrome, Lim took up magic as her career. In Close-up Card Magic, people discovered Lim around 2012, he started touring around the world, and then he won the 2015 Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques. During his thirteenth season in 2018, his appearances in Penn & Teller: Fool Us and her wins on America’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent: The Champions contributed to further international success.

Shin Lim: early life, education and family
Lim is the second son of his parents born on September 25, 1991 in Vancouver, Canada. He is of Han Chinese descent. Lim was born in Vancouver, where he was completing graduate studies with his father. When he was 2 years old, Lim’s family returned to Singapore; however, they later moved to Acton, Massachusetts when he was 11 years old. Lim attended Suburban High School in Acton-Boxborough. Lim showed interest in music from the age of 9. His grandmother had originally given him a violin, but after a practice session, he became dissatisfied with it and broke it and moved on to the piano. Talking about his educational qualification, Lim attended the Lee University School of Music in Tennessee after graduating from high school.

In addition to music, during his youth, Lim was fond of magic. He showed a simple card trick from his older brother Yi. Lim delved into the videos that were available there and taught a few tricks himself. He developed his own tricks as he began to improve his talents and used YouTube as a forum to demonstrate his performance and technique. As part of his inspiration for magic, Lim cited David Blaine’s early television specials, which moved away from massive stage shows to quick but efficient tricks like card magic.
Lim was approached by the creators of Penn & Teller: Fool Us, a show in which would-be magicians try to fool Penn & Teller’s hosts and magicians with their tricks, shortly after their World Championship victory in 2015. They saw her videos on YouTube and gave her a spot on the show to try and trick the hosts. His routine successfully fooled the hosts. Lim felt ready to appear on America’s Got Talent in 2017 after his second appearance on Fool Us, and his fiancée Casey Thomas further inspired him when he met his, a dancer and assistant to another magician.
