Mathew Gilmour was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1991 to Stewart and Kay Gilmour. He and his four siblings – Kyle, Chloe, Bethany and Ashlea – grew up in Aberdeen. His father was Deputy Headmaster at St Machar Academy in Aberdeen until his death in 2008. His mother, Kay, is the head of music at St Machar Academy. She is involved in charitable causes and raises funds for the CLAN Cancer Support Center.

In November 2009, Smart traveled to Paris to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, she briefly returned to the United States in November 2010 to serve as a key witness in the federal trial of Brian David Mitchell, her kidnapper. She then returned to Paris to complete her missionary service before returning to Utah in early 2011 just months later. By this time, however, she had started a relationship with a young Scottish missionary who the world later knew to be Matthew Gilmour.
After a year of courting, the lovebirds got engaged in January 2012. They married just a month later on February 18, 2012. The formal ceremony was held at the Laie Hawaii Temple and was attended by close friends and relatives.
Three years later in February 2015, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl they christened Chloe. In 2017 they had their second child, this time a boy; his name is James. In June 2018, Elizabeth Smart told fans that she and her husband were expecting their third child together. And five months later their second daughter Olivia was born.
