Born on July 7, 1992, in Chesterton, Indiana, Gaffigan attended Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana before continuing his education at Purdue Universtiy for just one year before transferring to the McDonough School of Business; an affiliate of Georgetown University from where he graduated in finance in 1988.
After graduating, he moved to New York in 1990 to pursue his career in comics. He started working for an advertising agency, but to keep his dream alive, young Gaffigan would take acting classes after hours. It was during his drama class that he was challenged to do a live comedy show and subsequently fell in love with performing. Although it took him about 7 years to find the style of comedy that suited him, the comedian eventually decided to use a high-pitched, third-person voice to deliver his jokes which he calls the voice that relates to the audience. .
The comedian’s career took off when, after starring on David Letterman’s The Parade in 1993, the host approached him to develop a series for production company Letterman World Wide Pants. The series didn’t have the same success the comedian expected, but he did manage to land roles in other shows and films, including: That ’70s Show and Sex and the City in 1998, Third Shows in 1999 and Ed in 2000.
