Do You Hear What I Hear Full Lyrics

Said the night wind to the little lamb,

do you see what I see

Way up in the sky, little lamb,

do you see what I see

A star, a star, dancing in the night

With a tail as big as a kite

With a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,

do you hear what I hear

Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,

do you hear what I hear

A song, a song, high above the trees

With a voice as big as the sea

With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,

do you know what I know

In your palace warm, mighty king,

do you know what I know

A Child, a Child shivers in the cold

Let us bring Him silver and gold

Let us bring Him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere,

listen to what I say

Pray for peace, people everywhere!

listen to what I say

The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night

He will bring us goodness and light

He will bring us goodness and light

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" The Meaning Behind The Lyrics

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" offers a story roughly based on the storey of Jesus' Nativity as given in Matthew's Gospel, with pieces of the annunciation to the shepherds from Luke's Gospel. However, Jesus is never named or identified. A "night wind" informs a lamb about a star, and the lamb tells his young shepherd about the song he hears. They are each led to a "powerful monarch," to whom they inform a cold youngster and request that silver and gold be brought to the child. The king prays for peace and declares that the kid will "bring goodness and light" to the world. The song's lyrics were written by Regney, while the music was composed by Shayne in October 1962. For the two authors, this was a unique arrangement. Shayne usually wrote the lyrics while Regney composed the music for their songs like they did when they wrote a tune based on the traditional children's "Rain Rain Go Away."
